Let Em Grow Up.

I had a friend complain to me this year that there are no trophy bucks left to shoot anymore. I asked him if he got his dear last fall. He said sure, but it was just a little two-point. I said that’s why there are very few trophy bucks left out there to hunt. A lot of bucks get killed before the get a chance to mature. I don’t care about getting my name in the record books, I hunt trophy bucks for the challenge. A mature buck is a lot smarter than a younger buck. There is a reason why they lived long enough to become big. The thrill of hunting believe it or not isn’t the kill, it’s the game of chess that you play matching wits with a cagey old buck. When you finally outsmart one, that’s the thrill that’s the rush. The problem is that you have to be willing to come home empty handed more often than not. When you make the kill the fun is over for the fall, and you have to be more creative in order to come up with reasons to get out of the house. It takes a buck 4-5 years to mature, so to but it perspective when you are killing a spike or a two point buck you’re killing a kid. I know exactly what you are thinking, what about the hunters who need the meat. Now that is a very valid point, there are some families who rely on venison to get them through the winter. I have two responses to this. 1) Beef tastes better, most of the hunters that I know won’t starve to death if they don’t harvest a deer. 2) Get a B-Tag harvest a doe, and leave the bucks alone. Most states are very liberal on issuing doe tags, especially for whitetails.   Personally I think that the State Fish & Game departments should make it illegal to kill a buck under 4 points, but I don’t think that this is going to happen any time soon. So you should make it your own personal rule, at least until the last weekend of hunting season. Also only get a tag if you are the actual hunter. So many hunters with a wife and kids will shoot 4-5 deer per season. This is ridiculous, there is absolutely no reason for this nobody eats that much deer. I am always suspicious when I see a picture in the paper of a kid who looks like they could barely pick up the rifle with a deer that they supposedly shot. This makes me wonder who actually shot it.

I think that if everybody out there took my advice, and become more selective on the deer they shoot. In 4 to 5 years the trophy opportunities would increase dramatically. With more mature bucks there would be better genetics, and the herds would be a lot more resistant to harsh winters and disease. Thus increasing the overall number of deer to hunt. When you think about it, which would you feel better about harvesting a big mature buck or a little spike / fork horn.

Good luck and good hunting out there, but just remember when you see an immature buck this fall give him a pass and let em grow up!
