2016 A Good Year Hunting!

When you get to my age you realize that life is about the experiences not  about the acquisitions.  The worst day hunting is better then the best day at work, so I am never going to complain about getting to go hunting.  Although this year has been tough to find success, mostly due to the weird weather that we have been having here in Montana.  Last winter we had a severe lack of snowfall, so the little creek in my turkey hunting honey hole dried up, and all  the turkeys moved out. So I had to go and find a new one.    In October we had 3 1/2 inches of rain which registered as the second rainiest October in Montana in recorded history.  Hunting was limited, because of the over abundance of mud.  November was the warmest on record, I shot this mule deer buck in Northern Montana in Mid November, as you can see I am just wearing a Tshirt “Crazy”.   Montana FWP check stations showed a 30% decrease in animals harvested from 2015.  Especially elk which seemed to be 7 to 10 miles back in the mountains, or hiding out on private lands.  However I did see some cows on a couple of occasions this year, just not any bulls.  Remember hunting is supposed to fun, which a lot of hunters have forgotten, and some how managed to turn hunting into work?  Last month my elk hunting luck finally changed when I drew for a late season damage hunt, and I ended my five year elkless drought.  As long as hunting is still fun to me, and I am still physically able to go, I am not giving up, and I am still going hunting.  I still have a  wolf tag, and three months left fill it.

 Good Luck and Good Hunting

2017 My Best Year Hunting!

2017 was quite possible my best year hunting.  The year started out slow last spring, when I couldn’t get permission to hunt turkeys at any of my previous honey holes.  So, I went turkey less last year.  Although, I do have a couple of good leads of places to go this spring.   I started a new job last January, so I didn’t have any vacation time available in 2017.  I really didn’t have any time to go chase bears last spring, I hope this changes this year.  Montana is a good place to live, but a hard place to make a living!

I actually saw a real live wolf about 50 yards away from me on an elk shoulder season hunt, I had a wolf permit, but it was two weeks before wolf season opened, so it was that wolf’s lucky day.

I got a nice 13” antelope buck the first day of antelope season, and a nice four-point muley buck the second day of deer / elk season last October.  Then I sprained my knee running on my treadmill (it’s a bitch getting old), which kind of put a damper on looking for a bull elk.

But thanks to the kindness of Montana FWP, and the luck of the draw I drew a late season cow elk tag, and a buffalo tag.  I filled both tags, and now have a freezer full of meat.In such situation, make sure tadalafil soft medical attention is received immediately. Last year there was 5000 applications submitted for buffalo in my area, and only 40 permits issued.  So, it was kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity.  The buffalo hunting season ran from November 15, 2017 to February 15, 2018.  The Montana FWP has a Bison hotline that you can call, check to see if any buffalo have migrated out of Yellowstone Park and legal to hunt.  I called every week, and every week there were no buffalo sightings to report.  Finally, on Thursday January 25th the line reported some Buffalo where close to crossing the line.  I and two of friends went early the Following Saturday morning, and I harvested my buffalo.  Last year Montanan and Native American hunters harvested 600 buffalo in the Gardiner area.  My buffalo was the tenth buffalo harvested thus far for the season. Some times it is better to be lucky than good.   I having the head mounted European style, and the meat is very tasty.

Hunting 2019

2019 was another great of a year of hunting for me! I found a way to  make it out in the field a few times and really enjoyed hunting, fishing, mountain biking, skiing, golfing and just being in the great outdoors.

2019 Coyote hunting was hindered due to the harsh winter weather, and the difficulty in getting to prime hunting spots without getting stuck.  But I did manage to bag a few coyotes.  I didn’t see any wolves or fox last year.

I did manage to find some good turkey hunting spots last spring, and I bagged a nice tom with my bow.  I like to use my bow turkey hunting, because my shotgun is pretty much ineffective past 30 yards.  Even using a full choke and turkey shot.  With my bow I feel comfortable shooting up to 50 yards, almost doubling my range.

The first day of antelope I spotted a nice buck out in the flats, but I had no way of sneaking up on him without risking spooking them into running onto private ground.  So, I put them to bed, and Sunday morning walked in in the dark and sat in front of a round bale.  I figured that when the sun comes up, he would be right there, but when the sun came up that morning the herd had moved over to the private land during the night.  I sat for four hours waiting for the buck to come back onto public ground.  When I finally shot him, he was only 87 yards away.

There is a deer in my hunting area that I nicknamed Grampa, and he is a Boone & Crocket buck!  I saw him fall of 2018 after I had tagged out, so last year I promised myself I was going to wait to see Grampa until I took a shot.  I was getting a little nervous passing up smaller bucks, but I finally got Grampa the second to the last weekend of the season.

I went elk hunting twice last fall, both the opening and closing days.  Both days it was blizzarding, and I just kind of guessing where the road was.  So, my bad luck on bagging a bull continued for me last year.  If anybody would like me to come and hunt some elk for them, please let me know.

This year I promised myself to hunt a lot harder, right now I am working out and shooting my bow once a week in preparation for this year’s hunting seasons.  In 2020 I will be trying to fill all my tags, and I will be going after antelope, deer, elk, turkeys, predators and anything else that I can draw a tag for (I would love to shoot a moose)!
