ABASORKEE RIVER AVENTURES

Rough Rider Outdoors is pleased to announce our newest sponsor Absarokee River Adventures. They are located in Absarokee, Montana about 55 miles southwest of Billings, Montana, and about 35 miles southwest of where I live.   They offer white water rafting trips down the Stillwater and Yellowstone rivers. Despite its name the Stillwater is actually the fastest moving river in Montana. The Stillwater flows out of the Beartooth Mountains ”the highest & steepest mountains in Montana” down through the foothills in the Stillwater Valley. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, and if you have an extra day, you should go fishing on the Stillwater. I have fished the Stillwater quite a bit, because it’s the second closes river to my house, and it offers good brown and rainbow trout fishing with a variety of fishing accesses starting just outside Columbus going all the way to the headwaters above Nye. Absarokee River Adventures offers trips from mild to wild, but if you are an adrenaline junkie it’s best to go in June during the spring run off when the water is the highest.

My daughter and I floated last weekend, we actually floated the Yellowstone, because the Stillwater is running very low right now.   Although it was August 8th, it was the coldest day of year. The temperature was 55 degrees, and pouring down rain. The only other people who were brave enough to face it where two ladies from Laurel, with four elementary aged girls. My Dad had a saying “want ever doesn’t kill you only makes you tougher”, my daughter’s take on the saying is that shopping makes you tougher, since shopping doesn’t kill you.   The weather was terrible, but my guide Max was great. He was telling me about a new outdoor sport called over-landing. This is taking a 4 * 4 vehicle and turning it into a pseudo RV, and going camping off the grid for a week. I told him that I do the same thing I just call it elk hunting. The water was a bit low, but we did go through some fun class three rapids. The girls provided the screams, and the comic relief asking Max about evert 15 minutes or so “are we there yet”? Generally this would have been annoying, but I had to give them a break since they were very cold and wet. Kudos to my daughter, who never complained. Sunday the temperature was back up to 90 degrees without a cloud in the sky, go figure? WhiIe driving back in the van to the launch point, one of the ladies asked me if I made up Rough Rider Outdoors. I said no it’s real. Of course she meant if I designed it. I think that this week I will be researching for fly fishing guides that float that same stretch of river, because I floated by what l to looked like some killer trout holes.
